The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu called for adopting a multi-pronged strategy to arrest the growing incidence of cancer–from launching an aggressive awareness campaign on the need to lead a healthy lifestyle to hold regular health screening camps at the community level. Emphasizing collective action, Shri Naidu said, “Let us act together to prevent cancer and save lives.”
The Vice President made these remarks while virtually inaugurating the IFCPC 2021 World Congress hosted by the Indian Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. He also launched a special edition of ‘Indian Journal of Gynaecological Oncology’ during the event.

The Vice President highlights the urgent need to bring down the cost of cancer treatment.

Noting that cervical cancer is ranked as the second most common cancer in Indian women, the Vice President pointed out that cervical cancer is both preventable and curable. He said that early diagnosis through routine screening of apparently healthy women has led to a phenomenal reduction in the global burden of the disease. “If we adopt a comprehensive approach to prevent, screen and treat cervical cancer, it can be eliminated as a public health problem,” he added.
Highlighting that cervical cancer can be prevented by the means of vaccine, Shri Naidu said, “the Anti-HPV vaccine administered to young girls has been seen as a proven tool in the prevention of cervical cancer.”
Shri Naidu urged private hospitals to organize regular visits of healthcare specialists to rural areas and spread awareness amongst people on the preventive measures, early symptoms of cervical cancer, the importance of early detection and the benefits of the HPV vaccine.
Drawing attention to the growing menace of cancer, the Vice President mentioned that in 2020 alone, nearly 10 million people died of cancer worldwide. “With around 70 per cent of cancer deaths occurring in low-to-middle income countries, the burden of cancer-related morbidity and mortality is higher for them and has grave implications to the economy of these nations,” he added.

कर्करोगाच्या वाढत्या प्रमाणाला आळा घालण्यासाठी, बहुआयामी धोरण ठरवण्याची गरज आहे, असे मत उपराष्ट्रपती एम वेंकैया नायडू यांनी व्यक्त केले. त्यासाठी निरोगी जीवनशैली अंगीकारण्याबाबत एक आक्रमक जनजागृती मोहीम राबवण्यासोबतच, सामुदायिक पातळीवर वेळोवेळी आरोग्यविषयक तपासणी शिबिरे आयोजित करण्यावर त्यांनी भर दिला. यासाठी एकत्रित मोहीम राबवण्याची गरज असल्याचे सांगत, “कर्करोगाला आळा घालणे आणि लोकांचे जीव वाचवण्यासाठी एकत्र येऊया,”असे आवाहन त्यांनी केले.
आयएफसीपीसी 2021 च्या जागतिक संमेलनाचे आभासी पद्धतीने उद्घाटन करतांना ते बोलत होते. इंडीयन सोसायटी ऑफ कोल्पोस्कोपी अँड सर्वायकल पॅथॉलॉजीने हे जागतिक संमेलन आयोजित केले आहे. उपराष्ट्रपतींच्या हस्ते, “इंडियन जर्नल ऑफ गायनॉकॉलॉजिकल ओंकॉलॉजीच्या विशेषांकाचेही प्रकाशन झाले.
गर्भाशयमुखाचा कर्करोग हा भारतीय महिलांना होणारा दुसऱ्या क्रमांकाचा कर्करोग आहे, याकडे लक्ष वेधत उपराष्ट्रपती म्हणाले की गर्भाशयाच्या कर्करोगावर उपचार शक्य असून तो पूर्णपणे बरा होऊ शकतो. नियमित तपासणीमुळे त्याचे प्रमाणही कमी झाले आहे. जर आपण कर्करोगाचा सामना करण्यासाठी प्रतीबंधात्मक आणि सर्वंकष उपाय केले तर त्याचे समूळ उच्चाटन शक्य आहे,असे नायडू म्हणाले.
गर्भाशयमुखाच्या कर्करोगावर लस उपलब्ध असून, त्यामुळे. हा आजार रोखता येऊ शकतो, असे त्यांनी सांगितले.
खाजगी रुग्णालयांनी यावर जनजागृतीसाठी ग्रामीण भागात तज्ञ डॉक्टरांचे दौरे आयोजित करावेत आणि महिलांना प्रतिबंधक उपायांची माहिती, गर्भाशयाच्या कर्करोगाचे लवकर निदान होण्याचे तसेच लसीच्या महत्वाविषयी माहिती द्यावी, असे नायडू म्हणाले.
2020 साली जगभरात सुमारे एक कोटी लोकांचा कर्करोगाने मृत्यू झाला, यापैकी 70 टक्के मूत्यू कमी आणि मध्यम उत्पन्न असलेल्या देशातील होते, याकडेही त्यांनी लक्ष वेधले.
