Linking PAN Card with Aadhaar Card (PAN Card -Aadhaar Card link) is very important. But not many people have linked it yet. However, now the government has provided the facility of linking by paying a fine.

As per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961 (‘Act’), every person who has been allotted a PAN card on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to get an Aadhaar number must notify his Aadhaar card to the prescribed authority.

But now the date of providing Aadhaar card information to the prescribed authority for the purpose of linking PAN and Aadhaar has been extended till June 30, 2023.

From July 1, 2023, as required, the PAN card of taxpayers who fail to notify Aadhaar will become inactive and the consequences for the period of PAN card inactivity will be as follows:

  • No refund will be given for such PAN
  • No interest shall be payable on such refund for the period during which the PAN remains inactive
  • TDS and TCS will be deducted/collected at higher rates, as provided by law
  • PAN card can be re-activated within 30 days after providing the Aadhaar card information to the prescribed authority after paying a fee of Rs.1,000.

The above-mentioned consequences will not apply to persons who have been exempted from PAN-Aadhaar linkage.

This category includes persons resident in certain specified states, non-residents by law, non-citizens of India or persons aged eighty years or more at any time during the previous year.
