An ordinance will be issued to implement a multi-member ward system in Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils.
The decision to re-introduce the provision of multi-member wards in the Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils of the state was taken in the Cabinet meeting held today. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The ordinance in this regard will be sent for the signature of the Governor for promulgation.
The Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Towns Act, 1965 were amended to introduce one member ward system in the Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils of the State. However, the issues pointed out while dealing with the health situation created during Covid-19, as well as the facts pointed out by the people’s representatives; It was decided to re-implement the provision of the multi-member ward for Municipal Corporations by amending the relevant section of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, taking into account the fact that civic representation (multi-member ward system) in the ward can solve civil problems and discharge responsibilities more efficiently.
Accordingly, it was approved to amend the Act to determine the number of members, not less than two and not more than four, as far as possible, from each ward in the jurisdiction of the Corporation.
