Mumbai: The reduced number of passengers due to the Corona crisis and rising fuel prices are putting a financial burden on the coffers of the ST Corporation. To reduce the financial burden on the corporation, the ST Corporation has decided to convert 1,000 vehicles in its fleet into CNG, said Adv. Transport Minister Shri Parab said that due to the Corona crisis, the number of ST passengers has decreased and its revenue has been affected. The price of diesel is also increasing day by day. The ST Corporation has 17,000 diesel-powered buses in its fleet, which accounts for 34 per cent of the total cost. It has now reached 38 to 40 per cent due to rising diesel prices. Considering the multi-crore cost of diesel, it has been decided to use diesel as an alternative fuel.

Along with CNG, buses running on environmentally friendly fuels such as electric and LNG will soon be introduced in ST’s fleet. Therefore, ST will give priority to environmentally friendly travel along with saving on fuel costs in future. Mr Parab has been instructed to use other alternatives besides CNG to reduce fuel costs.

The ST Corporation has opted for environmentally friendly fuels to keep the cycle of nature disturbed by climate change uninterrupted as well as to provide pollution-free travel to the passengers in view of rising diesel prices. For this, 1000 vehicles currently running on diesel will be converted to CNG as an alternative fuel. The state government will provide funds to the ST Corporation for this retrofitting. Mr Parab also expressed the belief that the ST Corporation will definitely help in reducing the cost of fuel due to CNG and preventing environmental damage due to pollution.
