Postponement of elections for backward class seats of citizens
Mumbai: As per the order of the Supreme Court, the elections for the backward class seats of the citizens in the general and by-elections of the local bodies to be held on December 21, 2021, have been postponed, informed the State Election Commissioner U.P. S. Madan gave here today.
Mr Madan said that as per the election program announced by the State Election Commission, the general elections for 106 Nagar Panchayats, Bhandara and Gondia Zilla Parishads and 15 Panchayat Samitis in the state will be held on December 21, 2021. The by-elections for 4 vacancies in 4 Municipal Corporations and 7,130 vacancies in 4,554 Gram Panchayats will also be held on December 21, 2021. The election was declared subject to a petition filed in the Mumbai High Court.
Following the order of the Supreme Court dated 6th December 2021, the elections for the backward class seats of the citizens in all these local bodies have now been postponed; However, elections for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and general seats will continue as per the pre-announced schedule. Necessary action will be taken as per the next order of the Supreme Court regarding the postponed elections of the backward class seats of the citizens, said Mr Madan.
