Stock Market: Sensex declines 166 points, Nifty to trade at 17,325.
The Sensex and the Nifty today posted losses modest losses. Both stocks fell amid negative cues from the global equity markets. The Sensex closed near 58,100.
The BSE Sensex fell 166 points, or 0.29 per cent to trade at 58,117. The NSE Nifty also slipped 43 points, or 0.25 per cent, to trade at 17,325.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap index declined 0.37 per cent while the Small-Cap index gained 0.0.05 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 17 companies climbed while 23 fell. Power Grid was the top gainer as it climbed 3.8 per cent followed by Dr Reddy’s Lab which surged 1.1 per cent. Nestle India gained one per cent, Axix Bank rose 0.9 per cent and ICICI added 0.7 per cent.
On the other hand, ITC declined 2.7 per cent and Bajaj Finance fell 2.1 per cent. Kotak Bank ended 1.8 per cent down, Bharti Airtel slipped 1.6 per cent, and Reliance finished 1.2 per cent down.
In sectoral indices, 10 out of the 19 sectors gained. Power sector stocks were the top gainer as the index climbed 1.4 per cent. The utility index rose 1.2 per cent.
On the other side, Telecom plunged 1.4 per cent and Auto sector stocks fell 0.9 per cent
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 1801 companies gained while 1510 fell. Shares of 114 companies remained unchanged.
