The decision to increase the number of elected members in Municipal Corporations.

The decision to increase the number of elected members in Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils was taken at a Cabinet meeting held today in view of the rapidly growing population in the state as well as the need to accelerate urban development schemes. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.  Government of Maharashtra Mantralaya

At present, the number of members in the corporation is a minimum of 65 members and a maximum of 175 members. The number of members in the Municipal Council is a minimum of 17 members and a maximum of 65 members. There is a need to increase the number of members in order to give due justice to all sectors in order to accelerate the structural transformation of urban and small urban areas and the solution of civic problems and development plans.

The number of members in Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils is determined on the basis of 2011 census data. The results of the 2021 census are incomplete due to the outbreak of Kovid-19. It will take some more time. Considering the average rate of population growth during this period, it was decided to increase the minimum number of members of Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils mentioned in the Act by 17 per cent. Increasing the minimum number of members will also increase the number of subsequent members and thus ensure a sufficient number of members.

The minimum number of members elected for a population of more than 3 lakhs and up to 6 lakhs in a corporation is not more than 76 and the maximum number is not more than 96.
The minimum number of members elected for a population of more than 6 lakhs and up to 12 lakhs shall not be more than 96 and the maximum number shall not exceed 126.
The minimum number of members elected for a population of more than 12 lakhs and up to 14 lakhs shall not exceed 126 and the maximum number is 156.
The minimum number of members elected for a population of more than 24 lakhs and up to 30 lakhs shall not exceed 156 and the maximum number shall not exceed 168.
The minimum number of elected members for a population of more than 30 lakhs should not exceed 168 and the maximum number should not exceed 185.

The minimum number of elected council members in Class A Municipal Councils shall not exceed 40 and the maximum number shall not exceed 75.
The minimum number of elected council members in Class B Municipal Councils shall not exceed 25 and the maximum number shall not exceed 37.
The minimum number of elected council members in Class C Municipal Councils shall not exceed 20 and the maximum number shall not exceed 25.
