Mumbai: As per the order of the Supreme Court, the postponed seats of the backward class citizens of local bodies will now be unreserved and voting will be held on January 18, 2022, to fill them from the general category.

Voting for all remaining seats is scheduled for December 21, 2021; However, the counting of votes will take place on January 19, 2022, instead of December 22, 2021, on the same day in all places, said State Election Commissioner UPS. Madan gave here today.

Mr Madan said that according to the election program announced by the State Election Commission, the general elections for 106 Nagar Panchayats, Bhandara and Gondia Zilla Parishads and 15 Panchayat Samitis under them were to be held on December 21, 2021. The by-elections for 4 vacancies in 4 Municipal Corporations and 7,130 vacancies in 4,554 Gram Panchayats were also scheduled to be held on December 21, 2021.

According to the order of the Supreme Court dated December 6, 2021, the election process for the backward class seats of the citizens in all these elections was postponed. The election process for all the other seats is going on as planned.

As per the order of the Supreme Court dated 15th December 2021, a new election program has been announced to fill the seats of the backward class of citizens from the general category by immediately reserving them.

As the seats of the backward class of citizens have been made unreserved, they have now become for the general category. Therefore, out of these seats, seats reserved for ordinary women will be vacated.
