The state government is giving top priority to the safety of women and incidents of violence against women are a matter of concern. Criminals who abuse women must be held accountable. The performance of the police administration, women’s vigilance committee and social organizations working on women’s issues will be important, said Nilmathai Gorhe, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council.
She was speaking at a meeting on women’s safety at the Government Rest House. Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta, Pimpri Chinchwad Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash, Pune Joint Commissioner of Police Dr Ravindra Shiswe, Superintendent of Police Dr Abhinav Deshmukh were present on the occasion.
Mrs Gorhe said the Witness Protection Act should be strictly enforced. It is necessary to increase the number of CCTVs, increase the number of patrols and install street lights at the places where frequent incidents take place so that women can get immediate information about the harassment. Effective implementation of this is essential for women’s safety. He also said that follow-up is underway with a view to expeditious disposal of pending cases under the Poxo Act.
Stating that she would follow up with the Chief Minister regarding the pending issues regarding the law and justice department, Mrs Gorhe said that the system should be vigilant to make women feel safe while travelling in the public transport system in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad metropolis. He also directed the Railway Police, State Police Force to increase the number of CCTVs and online surveillance to prevent crime on the spot, set up WhatsApp groups for an early understanding of women’s grievances and increase the participation of social organizations in police investigations and victim counselling. He said that special efforts should be made by the concerned agencies for the empowerment of trust cells, the establishment of self-help groups for women, counselling of women, timely report of the forensic lab.
On this occasion, Commissioner of Police Gupta, Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash, Joint Commissioner of Police Dr Shiswe, Superintendent of Police Dr Deshmukh informed about the measures being taken for the safety of women in their area.
